Baby Shower Gifts: Traditional vs. Personalized

By Damian Sofsian

Baby showers are surprise parties thrown by friends or colleagues to honor a couple that is joyously expecting a child. The purpose of the shower is to bestow gifts upon the parents-to-be so that are generally items that are necessary for babies. Baby showers are a perfect reason for friends and family to come together and meet the parents-to-be and the baby (if it is already born). It is a time for well wishing and celebration.

Gifts for baby showers can range from simple baby items like a crib or baby clothes to special gifts like a portable monitor, baby sheets, sling/front carrier, bouncers, specially designed toys, bath kits, activity toys like a baby gym, baby bags, and children’s books. There are many products in the market that are great as baby shower gifts. There are also websites which offer exclusive information about baby shower gifts.

Personalized gifts are also a wonderful way to show affection. Babies can be really demanding and would take a lot of adjusting too as soon as they are born. Friends can even plan to gift a few dinners to the couple who just had and baby and who are too tired or too busy to cook by themselves. Even the offer of a few days of baby sitting is a wonderful gift. If the baby shower has a theme, it is a great idea to give gifts that are based on that theme. These gifts can be used to decorate the baby’s room on the same theme. Sometimes, the gifts can be second-hand or used items, which are too expensive when brought new.

It is a good idea to enquire with the mom-to-be if she wants anything special since she may already have a few things belonging to her previous baby. This would help to avoid duplication. There are many gifts on the market exclusively for baby showers. These can even be ordered online and can be delivered to the parents-to-be if the guest cannot make it to the party.

Christmas Stocking Stuffers - Ideas For Everyone

By Michelle Blaise

While everyone gets excited about the big gifts that are under the tree at Christmas, Christmas stocking stuffers can also be a source of great excitement. The trick is to make sure that you fill the stockings with items that are just as exciting as what is under the tree.

Children and adults alike can be delighted by what they find in their stockings on Christmas morning. Although some families simply fill Christmas stockings with cheap candy, fruit or token gifts, it can be a lot of fun to start a new family tradition of filling the Christmas stockings with special, more expensive (or more unique) gifts.

Here are a few ideas for memorable Christmas stocking stuffers:

Toys: when it comes to little ones you can’t go wrong with toys. There are such a wide variety to choose from that you’ll have no trouble finding something for a child of all ages.

Jewelry: it comes as no surprise that jewelry is one of the favorite Christmas stocking stuffers around. Jewelry is small and can also be quite expensive; however, this does not have to be the case. If you are filling the stocking of a child, you can simply put costume or seasonal jewelry in the stocking. Children can even make jewelry for mom and use that as a stocking stuffer. If you want to make the gift truly the talk of the day and something that will be bragged about for weeks to come, then an expensive piece of jewelry might be the best option.

Photographs: small framed photos can be a very thoughtful stocking stuffer. You can even make the gift even more special by having children decorate the picture frame. Another idea for photographs would be to purchase small photo frames with magnets on the back. These make cute refrigerator magnets and will bring a smile to the recipient’s face each time he or she looks at them.

Candy: you can go with the traditional inexpensive candy for the stocking, but for a special treat purchase the expensive chocolates that the recipient would never purchase any other time. This makes a decadent gift that will certainly be enjoyed (and will disappear quickly).

Coffee and tea: if you have a coffee or tea lover to buy for, fill up the stocking with flavored teas and coffees. You can also find small sizes of flavored creamer, as well.

Gift cards: purchase a gift card for the recipient’s favorite store or restaurant. Use a small box or tin to wrap it in. If you’re not sure which store or restaurant to purchase a gift card from, you can always purchase a prepaid Visa gift card. These prepaid cards are accepted anywhere you can use a debit Visa (even online). A prepaid Visa gift card is also a great idea as a Christmas stocking stuffer for a college student.

No matter whether you decide to go with an expensive gift or the traditional less-expensive gifts as Christmas stocking stuffers, the most important part is that you put a great deal of thought and care into whatever you decide to give. Your thoughtfulness will shine through and make a big impression on whoever receives your special stocking stuffer.

Birthstone Gemstones Are Filled With Symbolism

By Andy Green

The argument that we have a predestined fate, and that we make our destiny is an age old one, being the object of discussion in many a philosophical conversation. It is also an argument that can never have a proven conclusion, only believers in either, by choice as a result of experience. Birthstone gemstones are closely related to the astral powers that be, according to the believers.

Every sun sign has a birthstone gemstone associated with it, which is supposed to be lucky for the person born during that period. This is the simplest of explanations of birthstones. People use various stones hoping for various affects that the stone will have on their lives. At the same time, people avoid contact with certain stones that will bring them bad luck and misery. Although this may seem like something out of a fairy tale to westernized society, these things are practiced extravagantly in countries like India, where people go to the ‘learned man’ (probably a palm reader), who looks at the palm and foresees an event about to go wrong, and provides the means to avoid that event by wearing one gem stone, removing one, and things like that.

Some may laugh at the idea, while others follow their birthstone gemstones related issues with religious belief. Psychology says if you believe you are doing something to help solve a problem, that is half the battle won, call it psychology, call it faith, but if you wear a gemstone in the belief that it will help you, then it will! If you don’t wear a stone knowing well that you need to, you are probably going to make some mistakes! Anyway this was the original idea behind gemstones and why people wore them.

Today, many women choose birthstone gemstones as ornaments with jewel value, if nothing more. Many people wear their birthstone as a symbol of their identity. Whatever the reason, gemstones are very beautiful objects that ignite a spark in your emotions, and make you stare at them in awe.

Birthstone gemstones have various divisions like mystical stones, ayurvedic (Indian) stones, modern, traditional, astrological, planetary, talismanic and ancient cultural birthstones. Each category has a story and a reasoning behind it, each stone is believed to be special, and is great fun if nothing else, to hear why a stone is special and how it will help your life, and how it is meant specially for the particular individual in question.

In western society, gemstones and birthstones reached heights of popularity during the hippie days, when people began experimenting with eastern philosophies, and today offer a sweet reminder of those times to many a person who lived their youth during that period. Gemstones come in every imaginable color (including black by the way), which provide an opportunity to wear a stone with practically any color theme.

Birthstone gemstones come in a variety of sizes as well, and like any other jewelry, the bigger they are, the more rare , and thereby more expensive they are. As far as the fashion oriented use of gemstones and birthstone goes, smaller ones are used on rings and earrings and somewhat larger on necklaces and pendants. Gemstones vary in price from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars!

Birthstone Chart - Read about your Birthstone

By Natalie Inger

Each month of the year has a birthstone associated with it, and each gem brings with it a unique history and set of legends. Birthstone jewelry can make a very thoughtful and personal gift. The following is a brief description of each birthstone.

January: Garnet jewelry, most commonly a coy crimson red color, also comes in a variety of other colors from bright oranges and yellows to glowing green and muted earth tones. The Garnet stone represents faith, health, and good fortune, and is thought to exert a calming influence on its wearer. Garnet jewelry is said to give peaceful sleep and protect its owner from nightmares.

February: Amethyst gems come in pretty purple shades from lilac to deep violet; reflecting the traditional colors worn by royalty. Amethyst jewelry supposedly wards off the ‘heady’ effects of wine, and is rumored to sharpen one’s mind and improve intellect. Amethysts also symbolize good humor and wit.

March: Aquamarine is a beautiful transparent pale blue stone, which is said to bestow courage in times of adversity. The gem, whose color reminds us of the ocean, brings its wearer a sense of serenity and strength.

April: The Diamond birthstone represents romance, mystery and passion. Once an adornment worn only by kings, the timeless diamond gem is the ultimate token of brilliance and affection.

May: Known as the gem of Spring, Emeralds are considered to boost fertility and have protective powers. This glowing green stone was thought to give insight into the future. Emerald jewelry is often gifted to travelers, so that they might have safe long and prosperous journeys.

June: In all of their memorizing iridescence, Pearls bestow the gift of clarity and light on their owners. Pearl jewelry symbolizes modesty and purity. Pearls are also believed to be a window into a wearer’s inner beauty.

July: Ruby: like a perfect red rose, the color of the ruby denotes love and passion. In medieval times, it was believed that ruby jewelry had magical powers in warding against evil. The ruby stone was thought to have turned darker when danger was near, and it was also thought that the gem would be restored to its natural color once danger had passed.

August: The Peridot symbolizes luck and success. According to the legends of Egyptian kings, in order for Peridot to exert its fullest power, it must be set in gold and hung around one’s neck. Only then can it ward off evil.

September: Sapphire stones are powerful bringers of faith and good fortune. Known as the Gem of Autumn, ancient kings believed that merely looking upon a Sapphire pendant would bring good luck.

October: Opals come in varying shades of soft colors which make each and every opal unique. In olden days it was believed that contained within a single amulet of opal, was the power to see the future. Opal jewelry is thought to possess magical powers.

November: Derived from the Latin word for “lemon,” Citrine stones are delicately colored yellow and orange gems that symbolize generosity. Citrine jewelry is thought to help its wearer safeguard and keep secrets. Citrine has been regarded throughout history as a stone of mystery and subtly.

December: Associated with Jupiter, the god of the sun, Topaz is a beautifully entrancing gem that is sometimes colored amber-golden-brown but can also come in blue and pink as well. The ancient Egyptians believed that Topaz had the power to protect the faithful from harm. If a Topaz wearer was not protected by the stone, it was then assumed that he or she had been unfaithful.
